Michael Millan, 56, was fatally stabbed in the woods behind the Lakeland Bus depot on Labor Day
ROCKAWAY TOWNSHIP — Authorities have charged a third man in connection with the killing a 56-year-old homeless man on Labor Day.
Derwin Y. Rodriguez, 31, of Dover, was arrested Tuesday on charges of conspiracy to commit aggravated assault and endangering an injured person by failing to help or find third-party assistance in the death of 56-year-old Michael Millan, Morris County Prosecutor’s Office spokesman Fred Snowflack said.
Authorities say Jeysi Joran Carnales-Cardona, 37, of Dover, stabbed Millan multiple times in the chest and struck him in the head with a rock.
Rodriguez conspired with Carnales-Cardona, who is also homeless and an undocumented immigrant, to attack Millan and failed to help him after he was injured, authorities said. Another man, Francisco Gonzales-Domingues, was also charged with failing to help Millan after he was injured.
Carnales-Cardona, known as Joran, was charged with murder, weapon possession, witness tampering and providing false information to law enforcement.
Police responded to the homeless encampment in the wooded area behind the Lakeland Bus depot, near the borders of Dover, Rockaway Township and Victory Gardens, on Sept. 6 at 5:08 p.m. following a 911 call from a person who reported finding Millan’s body.
Millan had died two days earlier, authorities said.
Authorities also determined Carnales-Cardona tampered with a witness in the days after Millan’s death, and later provided false information to law enforcement, authorities said.
According to an affidavit reviewed by the Daily Record, Millan had reported to police on Sept. 3 that Carnales-Cardona stole from him. The newspaper also reported that Rodriguez is an undocumented immigrant.
The person who called 911 told NJ Advance Media that Millan was from Grenada and often worked painting jobs.
