The third-year tackle said he expects to play against Detroit. If he can’t, Wheeler, an undrafted rookie out of USC, could be elevated into the starting lineup – and the firestorm that surrounds the Giants’ embattled line.

“I’m excited,” Wheeler said. “I’m on the roster, so I prepare every week like I’m playing. I’m ready.”

It’s not a given Wheeler would get the nod if Hart can’t play. Veteran guard D.J. Fluker has NFL experience at right tackle. But all indications point to Wheeler being the first man off the bench if the Giants need a tackle.

Wheeler was active for the Dallas game. Fluker was inactive. Offensive line coach Mike Solari made it clear last week he thinks Fluker, a former first-round pick by the Chargers, is a better guard than tackle at this point in his career.
