A cougar warning is in effect for the Votier’s Flats area in Fish Creek Provincial Park, officials said Tuesday.

The warning comes a week after a closure in the same area due to a black bear.

The cougar advisory will be in effect until further notice, the Alberta Parks website indicates.

Officials say while the warning is in place for the Fish Creek park area, cougars can be encountered anywhere in the Kananaskis Region and at any time.

To avoid a surprise encounter with a cougar, safety tips include making plenty of noise and travelling in groups, being aware of your surroundings, looking and listening for cougars and their signs, and keeping your pet on a leash.

If you do encounter a cougar, officials warn: do not run, do not turn your back on the animal, back away slowly, make yourself appear as large as possible and maintain eye contact with the cougar. Always leave room for the cougar to escape and immediately pick up small children.

Any cougar sightings can be reported by calling 403-591-7755.
