They are the favorite to land him.

The Vikings give free agent quarterback (and Jets target) Kirk Cousins the best chance to accomplish his stated primary goal — win now.

So this news comes as no surprise:

The #Vikings are in the driver’s seat for free agent QB Kirk Cousins. They offered him a 3-year, $28M per year deal. It is not over. But if the visit goes well, he is likely to sign there.

Cousins cannot make any visits until he technically becomes a free agent when the new league year begins (along with the free agency signing period) at 4 p.m. Wednesday. The free agency negotiating window opened at noon Monday. Cousins’ visit will begin Wednesday evening, according to NFL Media.

Then there’s this:

Teams aren’t permitted to arrange visits during the negotiating window. The league’s media operation is reporting that the Vikings have essentially violated this provision.

It’s been obvious all along that the Vikings are a much better destination for Cousins than the Jets, whose offer probably would have to vastly exceed Minnesota’s.

While the Jets are still developing into a winner (with no guarantees that they’ll get there), the Vikings are currently a winning organization.

Cousins (smartly) wanted to take free agency visits to prospective employers before agreeing to sign. But he might wind up having to take only one visit.
