Redshirt senior offensive linemen Tariq Cole and Kevin Wilkins took part in a punt-catching contest at halftime of the Scarlet-White football scrimmage on Saturday, April 14, 2018 (4/14/18) at High Point Solutions Stadium in Piscataway, N.J.
Football teams normally head to their locker rooms at halftime, but the Rutgers’ Scarlet and White squads stayed on the field on Saturday to watch two 300-pound linemen attempt to catch punts.
Offensive lineman Tariq Cole (6’6″, 320 pounds) and defensive lineman Kevin Wilkins (6’2″, 306 pounds) stood near midfield as punts were sent soaring into the afternoon air. The two redshirt seniors had mixed results as they staggered around the field chasing the wind-blown footballs.
The demonstration was a lighthearted break in the annual Scarlet-White scrimmage which showcased the quarterback play of true freshman Artur Sitkowski and redshirt senior Gio Rescigno. The two signal callers appear to be the leading candidates to win the starter job during training camp in August when head coach Chris Ash expects to make his decision during the third week of practice.
Scarlet-White game: 9 final observations
Sitkowski thrilled the crowd with a 75-yard touchdown pass to Bo Melton, but also threw a pair of interceptions. He finished with 280 yards on 11-for-24 passing with three touchdowns and those two interceptions. Rescigno, who has started 12 games over the past two seasons, threw for 87 yards on 9-for-19 passing. The season begins with a September 1 contest at High Point Solutions Stadium against Texas State.
The scrimmage then ended on an emotional note when four-year-old Mordecai Carthy set a “record” with a 93-yard touchdown run, breaking the mark set by Mohamed Sanu in 2010. Young Mordecai is one of 36,000 patients at Children’s Specialized Hospital where he receives treatment for autism.
