This divorce has been at least a decade in the making. But it took a national #MeToo-era scandal to prompt Annette Roque to finally say enough is enough and to move to end her 20-year-old marriage to Matt Lauer, the ousted former host of the “Today” show.
People magazine reports that the couple are “on the brink” of divorce but said their split isn’t likely to come cheap. Over their years together, the couple amassed considerable assets in the hundreds of millions of dollars.
That’s largely due to Lauer’s earnings as the “Today” show. After NBC fired the 60-year-old Lauer in late November for inappropriate sexual conduct with several female staffers, Time magazine estimated his earnings over his career at the network to be more than $100 million and as high as $200 million. The New York Daily News and other outlets reported that he was earning $20 to $25 million annually in his final years at NBC.
During their time together, Lauer and Roque, 51, a Dutch-born former model, purchased multiple luxury properties in Manhattan and in the Hamptons.
They currently own a Hamptons mansion that they bought from Richard Gere in 2016 for $33 million, reports say. Roque lives in the main house with their three children — and Lauer occupies the guest house. They also own a nearby 25-acre Sag Harbor estate that’s currently on the market for $12.75 million, and a New York City apartment that’s for sale for $7.35 million.
“Certainly if I were [Annette’s] lawyer I would be looking at getting something close to 50 percent” of the fortune, a New York-based divorce attorney told People. The attorney, Bernard Post, is not involved in the case.
