Calgarians hoping to escape west of the city this long weekend might want to rethink taking Glenmore Trail when heading to the mountains.

Starting at 9 p.m. on Friday, westbound Glenmore Trail will be reduced to one lane between Deerfoot Trail and Blackfoot Trail S.E. until 5 a.m. on May 22.

The ramp from southbound Deerfoot to westbound Glenmore will also be closed as construction crews work to remove the CP Spur Bridge between Blackfoot Trail and 11 Street S.E.

The city said on its website the bridge crosses over a gully that used to be a rail corridor.

“The bridge has reached the end of its original lifespan and has become a maintenance liability,” the city said, adding it is cheaper to replace the bridge with a roadway than build a new bridge.

The city says drivers headed westbound on Glenmore through this stretch are advised to expect delays.
