JERSEY CITY – The City Council will hold a public hearing next week before adopting a $594 million municipal budget for 2018.

The budget, which was introduced in March, has since increased by $6.3 million, and received initial approval during an amendment vote on Tuesday evening.

Mayor Steve Fulop has touted the budget as coming with no increase in municipal taxes, though some residents’ tax bills are changing as a result of the citywide reval.

“Our City serves as proof that cities can be both fiscally responsible and socially progressive,” Fulop said in a statement. “This balance has been one of our major priorities, and as we start a second term, I promise to continue to move our City forward while focusing on long-term budgeting and management.”

The proposed budget, city officials said, includes funds to create an office of sustainability, hire new police officers and firefighters, and enforcement parking regulations 24/7.

Amendments given the initial OK include changes to the project totals in tax abatement revenue, additional funding for the tenant-landlord office, and the reorganization of what departments salaries are paid through. The amendments passed 7-0, with Ward A Councilwoman Denise Ridley and Ward F Councilman Jermaine Robinson absent.

Ward E Councilman James Solomon said he will vote against the budget, though he’s initially voted yes, citing $12 million in one-time land sales to fund an operational deficit and lack of funds being used in the public schools, which are slated to lose $175 million in state aid over the next seven years.
