Gray was pulled over by East Brunswick police, receiving a criminal summons and six traffic tickets.

Former Rutgers football player K.J. Gray was charged with possession of less than 50 grams of marijuana in June after a traffic stop by East Brunswick police, according to a complaint summons obtained by NJ Advance Media. Gray also received six traffic tickets, according to records, including careless driving and driving with an open container of alcohol.

Gray was dismissed from the football team on Wednesday for an unspecified violation of team rules. But two individuals with intimate knowledge of the situation told NJ Advance Media that Rutgers was not aware of the incident until athletics department officials were asked about it by a reporter on Wednesday after Gray had already been released from the program.

When reached by phone Wednesday, Gray said he was advised by his attorney to not comment on the allegations he faces in East Brunswick. Asked to comment on why he was dismissed from the team, Gray said he could not discuss specifics because his attorney, “told me to keep quiet on the situation.” Gray’s attorney, John Shiffman, has not responded to several messages.

NJ Advance Media reported Thursday evening as many as eight Rutgers football players are under investigation for fraudulent use of credit cards by university police. NJ Advance Media is withholding the names of the players allegedly under investigation because no one has been charged. When asked if his dismissal was connected to the investigation, Gray declined comment, citing his attorney’s advice.
