JERSEY CITY – A 21-year-old Jersey City man was sentenced to 11 years in prison today for the aggravated manslaughter of a close friend he shot outside a Marion Gardens housing complex building in 2015.

“My son called you his brother,” the mother of the slain Donald “Marquis” Gadson, 21, told Marcus Mair in court today before he was sentenced for the Oct. 16, 2015 homicide. “Marquis was my only son, my first born, my everything.”

“You have sent an entire family to a life that is a living hell,” the woman, Laneisha Trent added, while tears dripped from her face as she supported herself with her hands flat on the prosecution table.

It seems the homicide was over an incident that pitted Mair against his longtime friend.

Hudson County Assistant Prosecutor Najma Rana said Gadson worked for the U.S. Postal Service but had taken a year off to start a clothing line.

Trent told Mair she was pregnant at the time he killed her son, as was Gadson’s girlfriend. She said both babies were nearly lost due to the stress and grief his death saddled them with.

Trent added that her granddaughter will never know what it’s like for her father to call her “princess” and said they now spend her son’s birthday at his gravestone.

Mair, who was 19 at the time of the shooting, was apologetic when he spoke at the hearing.
