OAKLAND — The California Highway Patrol closed all lanes of Interstate 580 in East Oakland after a multi-vehicle collision claimed at least one person’s life Tuesday night, authorities said.

Shortly after 9 p.m., CHP officers received reports of a collision on I-580 near the Dutton Avenue off-ramp that sent one vehicle into the center divide before coming to rest in the fast lane and another vehicle into the slow lane.

At least half a dozen other vehicles approaching the scene either struck one or the other vehicle, suffering damage from driving over debris from the original collision before managing to pull off the highway.

Oakland Fire Department firefighters also responded to the scene alongside paramedics, finding at least one overturned vehicle and providing care to several injured people, including one person who was taken to a hospital but died en route, CHP Officer Damian Cistaro said.

CHP officers issued a Sig-alert at 9:40 p.m. blocking all eastbound I-580 lanes with no estimated time of reopening. No preliminary information was available about any collision factors.
