Avalanche shut out by Winnipeg in Semyon Varlamov’s return

Winnipeg, Manitoba — The Colorado Avalanche just couldn’t catch a break Saturday night in Winnipeg, falling 3-0 to the Jets. Semyon Varlamov was solid in his first game back after missing 11 games with a groin injury suffered against the Jets on January 2 in Denver. Varlamov stopped 29 of the 31 shots he faced, with little to no chance at all on the two pucks the Jets were able to get past him. The Jets struck early, capitalizing just 1:04 into an early first-period power play with Mikko Rantanen in the box for tripping. Patrik Laine buried his 24th goal of the season with a one-timer off a Blake… Read More

Bruins deliver cold wake-up call to Maple Leafs

BOSTON – For Toronto Maple Leafs fans who watched and cheered as their club reeled off four consecutive victories, scoring in bunches and clamping down at the business end, Saturday’s trip to TD Garden provided a cold wake-up call. The Bruins defeated Toronto 4-1 and have now captured standings points in a ridiculous 20 of their past 21 outings. The final score actually does the visitors a favour. Even the lone Leafs goal came off a Bruin’s blade. “There’s… Read More

Investment pros staying calm after rate fears clobber stocks

NEW YORK — The stock market has finally found something to fear. For more than a year, investors have brushed off bombastic talk about nuclear war, dysfunction on Capitol Hill and other worrisome situations. The Dow Jones industrial average and the Standard & Poor’s 500 glided to record after record, with few hiccups. This week, the calm cracked. The stock market finally got spooked by an ongoing sell-off in bonds. As bond prices fall, their yields go up, a signal of rising interest rates. Low interest rates have been an underpinning of the current bull market in stocks, now in its ninth year. On Friday, the rate on the 10-year… Read More

Travis Zajac scores twice to lead Devils past Penguins

NEWARK, N.J. — Travis Zajac scored two goals and set up another as the New Jersey Devils limited Pittsburgh to a season-low 16 shots in posting a 3-1 victory on Saturday night, ending the Penguins’ four-game winning streak.
