Jamie Overton out of ashes in the midst of ‘indefinite rupture’ of the red-box cricket
Jamie Overtonhe England and Surrey Fast Bowler who was permanent member of the test team during the series of this series against India, has announced an “indefinite rest of the red ball cryket”, a decision that effectively rules out this winter Ashes campaign.
Overton, 31, played the second and last of his two tests in the Oval in July, claiming two second entry WICKETS in the exciting defeat of six races in England. His previous match had arrived in Headingley in 2022, when he made a 97 in association with Jonny Bairstow, in the first summer of Ben Stokes and the administration of Brendon McCullum of the England team.
Despite its rare appearances, Overton was an almost certainty to appear in the Ashes team in England, given its robust construction, strong action and ability to play at 90 mph, all the attributes that the selectors have been identifying in their attempt to win in Australia for the first time since 2010-11.
However, in an interview with the TelegraphHe explained his reasons for the shock decision, saying that at this stage of his career, “it was no longer possible to commit completely to all formats at all levels, both physically and mentally.” He will be in Australia this winter, but as part of the Adelaide strikers at Big Bash, a team with which he has spent the last two seasons, and by whom MVP was appointed in early this year for his journey of 11 Wickts and 191 races at 95.50.
“After a great thought, I have decided to take an indefinite rest of the red ball cryket,” Overton said. “I feel very lucky to have played 99 first-class games, including two test matches for England. Red-Ball, first-class Cricket has provided the basis of my professional career and has been the entrance door to every opportunity that I have had in the game so far. It is where I learned the game, and fed the objectives and ambitions that have led me for so long.
“However, at this stage of my career, with the demands of the Crick in a 12 -month calendar, it is no longer possible to commit completely with all the formats at all levels, both physically and mentally. In the future, my approach will be in the white ball cryket, and I will continue giving everything to play at the highest level during the time I can.”
Overton is currently in Headingley, as part of the Team of the White Ball of England, with his first hate against South Africa on Tuesday. Speaking on the eve of the game, Harry Brook – The Captain and the Overton teammate through formats – admitted that he was surprised by the announcement and his time.
“A little surprised to be honest,” Brook said. “I thought it went well in that last test, he launched quickly. Obviously you must respect the decision that he will have a little rest of the red ball cryket. With luck, at some point we will see him again in the future.
“I heard rumors, but I had not heard it until today. You just have to respect the decision, obviously he does not feel that he wants to play the red ball cryket at the time and we cannot do anything about it. He has made the decision now, but it is unfortunate. I thought he did really well in that last test game and it would have been nice to have him there in the Ashes.”
However, from his perspective as a white ball captain, Brook acknowledged that the unique approach could be beneficial for his team. “Absolutely,” he said. “When it is completely fit and shooting, rays are thrown and can leave the park. I hope you can increase even more than you have now and be the best white ball player that can be.”
